Tips for your upcoming session:
#1 Plan your shoot ahead of time. Choose a time and location that works for you/ your family. Don't set yourself up for failure by choosing a date where everyone is rushing. If you are shooting at golden hour. That might mean 7 or 8 pm. Plan a extra nap for the kids, to stay up a little later if you think they will need it. If your session is a 6 am for sunrise, be prepared! Pack your tote of goodies and lay out your
outfits the night before. If your kids get hangry make sure you get them a pop tart or something before they get dressed.
#2 Let kids be kids. First things first- BREATHE. Stop looking at the time. They will run, they will play, they will love on you. Let them be themselves. Let them play. Let them enjoy themselves. Happy kids take awesome pictures. Does not bother me if he is holding his action figure. I don't care if she is twirling in a field. Remember.. that is them. And who they are. And they are AWESOME! We will play games. We will be silly. Repeat after me: Happy kids take awesome pictures. It is not worth the argument. Kids will match your energy. If you as the parent or guardian are all anxious and frustrated, they will be too. And it will out in your pictures...
This is very important. Relax, and let me do what I am good at.
#3 Cheese is for crackers. Gone are the days of standing still in a frigid pose and screaming "CHEESE!!!" Parents- please do not stand behind me and shout at your children to say "cheeeeese." No smile coming from that will ever look natural or authentic. It will result in a strained and forced look. Let me interact with your kids so I can get a real smile and capture your child's true personality.
#4 Focus on each other. Unless this is a solo shoot like a senior session or branding session. This shoot is most likely about you and your relationship with someone else or several others. You don't need to be focused on me the whole time. Remember you aren't in a relationship with my camera. You are here to document you, and people who are important to you. So show them some love! Take this as an opportunity to be present and silly with your family or significant other. Not everyone has to be looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. You’ll look your best if you look like you are naturally interacting with and enjoying the people around you. I will give you tips and prompts along the way to help guide you.
#5 Let's talk outfits. Stay away from matchy matchy. You want to compliment each other- not blend in together. Think longevity. If you plan to hang a canvas for multiple seasons... you are going to want to choose neutral colors with soft, flowing fabrics…. think creams, soft pastels, oatmeals, light browns, tans, grays, and slate blues. Think simple. Think natural. This will keep your look timeless and will really look good at just about any location no matter the season. One or two bold colors can really make a family session pop. Accessories and jewelry always are great ideas to add little pops of detail to your pictures.
Adding a hat for a few shots is great too.
#6 Choose a location that speaks to you. Choose a location that reflects your personality. If you love the water- pick somewhere that has a creek or a lake where we can get a little wet (or a lot wet.) If you like to go barefoot, choose a location with an open field or a beach. Love wildflowers? Chances are I know a place. Let's talk.
Another great idea is to choose to go somewhere authentic and personal to you. Or incorporate doing something you like to do or want to do.. and do it in your session.
You and your husband love breweries and pizza? ME TOO. Maybe I tag along on date night and capture you stuffing pizza in each others faces while you sip your fave IPAs. Sounds fun right? Are you a musical family? Bring that guitar! Are your kids into board games? What about game night on a quilt? Etc. Etc.
Remember to think of your photo shoot as an experience.
#7 Trust me. Trust the process. In other words respect the drip.
I am probably going to ask you to do something really awkward or silly. Do it anyways. Trust the process. Ultimately you are going to get out of this whatever you put into it. I can help you pose and I can help you style yourself, but I cannot erase uncomfortable looks. Or the frustration of your face. And I cannot create genuine moments out of thin air. I am a photographer, not a magician. You and your family members need to be all in- full send. And I am talking to you especially, Dad. Shake off the crummy attitude. I know, "you don't like pictures." Be present anyways. Be a cheerful participant. These images will be left as a legacy when your children are grown and have their own families one day. You will look back and be so glad you gave this time to your spouse and/or children. Have fun with it!
